Orlandina Basket - History

History

Following its foundation, the club played mostly in regional leagues, before being acquired in 1996. Following the bid, Orlandina Basket obtained two consecutive promotions up to Serie B2 in 1998, when former Italy international star Alessandro Fantozzi was signed. The club won promotion to Serie B1 in 2000, and to LegADue, the second-highest division in Italian basketball, the next year. Orlandina, however, relegated to Serie B1 in 2003. Nevertheless, in 2004 Orlandina was admitted back to LegADue by the federation because of league vacancies. Successively to that, Orlandina dominated the 2004/2005 LegADue table and promoted to Serie A, becoming the fifth Sicilian city to be represented in the Italian top basketball division, after Catania, Palermo, Trapani and Messina.

In September 2008 Orlandina Basket was excluded from Serie A championship due to legal problems, together with Basket Napoli. After this decision, the team restarted to play in Serie C Dilettanti, the fifth highest basketball league in Italy.

After two winning seasons, in the summer of 2012 Orlandina is picked up from DNA (Divisione Nazionale A, the third italian league) and is back in Legadue. The team is now coached by former player and Olympic medalist Gianmarco Pozzecco.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of all Magazines shows plainly that those which have attained celebrity were indebted for it to articles similar in natureto Berenice—although, I grant you, far superior in style and execution. I say similar in nature. You ask me in what does this nature consist? In the ludicrous heightened into the grotesque: the fearful coloured into the horrible: the witty exaggerated into the burlesque: the singular wrought out into the strange and mystical.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

Man watches his history on the screen with apathy and an occasional passing flicker of horror or indignation.
    Conor Cruise O’Brien (b. 1917)

The history of his present majesty, is a history of unremitting injuries and usurpations ... all of which have in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world, for the truth of which we pledge a faith yet unsullied by falsehood.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
