Open C Tuning is an open tuning for guitar. The open-string notes uses the three notes that form the triad of a C major chord: C, the root note; G, the perfect fifth; and E the major third. When the guitar is strummed without fretting any of the strings a C major chord is sounded. This means that any major chord can be easily created using one finger, fretting all the strings at once.
There are several Open C tunings, for example
- C-G-C-G-C-E.
This open C tuning was used by William Ackerman for his "Townsend Shuffle" and by John Fahey for his tribute to Mississippi John Hurt.
The English guitar used an open C tuning that approximated a major-thirds tuning, such as
- C-E-G♯-C-E-G♯.
Famous quotes containing the word open:
“All deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
