For a pattern without translational symmetry there are the following possibilities (1D point groups):

  • the symmetry group is the trivial group (no symmetry)
  • the symmetry group is one of the groups each consisting of the identity and reflection in a point (isomorphic toC2)

Famous quotes containing the words patterns and/or symmetry:

Persons grouped around a fire or candle for warmth or light are less able to pursue independent thoughts, or even tasks, than people supplied with electric light. In the same way, the social and educational patterns latent in automation are those of self- employment and artistic autonomy.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)

What makes a regiment of soldiers a more noble object of view than the same mass of mob? Their arms, their dresses, their banners, and the art and artificial symmetry of their position and movements.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
