The Old Senate Chamber is a room in the United States Capitol that was the legislative chamber of the United States Senate from 1810 to 1859. The room also served as the Supreme Court chamber from 1860 until 1935. It was designed in Neoclassical style and is elaborately decorated. Restored in 1976 as part of United States Bicentennial celebrations, it is preserved as a museum and for the Senate's use.

Famous quotes containing the words senate and/or chamber:
“As the House is designed to provide a reflection of the mood of the moment, the Senate is meant to reflect the continuity of the pastto preserve the delicate balance of justice between the majoritys whims and the minoritys rights.”
—Lyndon Baines Johnson (19081973)
“O birds, your perfect virtues bring,
Your song, your forms, your rhythmic flight,
Your manners for your hearts delight,
Nestle in hedge, or barn, or roof,
Here weave your chamber weather-proof,
Forgive our harms, and condescend
To man, as to a lubber friend,
And, generous, teach his awkward race
Courage, and probity, and grace!”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
