Oklahoma City Slickers - United Soccer League

United Soccer League

After the ASL folded, the club joined the newly formed United Soccer League as the Oklahoma City Stampede. The club once again came tantalizingly close to a league championship, winning the regular-season title on point differential over the Fort Lauderdale Sun but falling in the playoff semi-finals to the Houston Dynamos in a three-game series. This success, however, was short-lived. After the 1984 season, the club relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Tulsa Tornados, with Brian Harvey still attached as Head Coach. But the Tornados and the rest of USL folded in the spring of 1985 after just a handful of games.

Famous quotes containing the words united, soccer and/or league:

... the yearly expenses of the existing religious system ... exceed in these United States twenty millions of dollars. Twenty millions! For teaching what? Things unseen and causes unknown!... Twenty millions would more than suffice to make us wise; and alas! do they not more than suffice to make us foolish?
    Frances Wright (1795–1852)

If we were doing this in the Falklands they would love it. It’s part of our heritage. The British have always been fighting wars.
—British soccer fan. quoted in Independent (London, Dec. 23, 1988)

I am not impressed by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the best—it’s all they’ll take, leaving to others the problem of educating the country. They will give you an education the way the banks will give you money—provided you can prove to their satisfaction that you don’t need it.
    Peter De Vries (b. 1910)
