- The government of Gabon's El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba is under pressure following revelations about plans to sell the islet Mbiane to neighbouring Equatorial Guinea. The two nations' dispute about oil-rich territories in the Gulf of Guinea was hoped to be resolved this week during a meeting chaired by Kofi Annan, which was cancelled on short notice by Omar Bongo. The Gabonese newspaper L'Echo du Nord was shut down after reporting about apparent plans to sell the islet as Omar Bongo, "...for the first time since he came to power in 1967, sees his position threatened by a popular movement, which could soon force him to dismiss his government."
