Northern Valley Regional High School District

The Northern Valley Regional High School District is a regional school district composed of two public high schools in Bergen County, New Jersey. The regionalized district serves a student population of approximately 2,500 in grades 9-12.

The district comprises the suburban communities of Closter, Demarest, Harrington Park, Haworth, Northvale, Norwood and Old Tappan. Students from Rockleigh attend the district as part of a sending/receiving relationship.

As of the 2009-10 school year, the district's two schools had an enrollment of 2,561 students and 223 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.48.

The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "I", the second highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.

The District's Board of Education consists of nine members. Two members are from Closter and Norwood, and one member each from Demarest, Haworth, Harrington Park, Northvale and Old Tappan.

The communities in the district, made up of upper-middle income families, consistently support the school budget, which provides for varied, in-depth college preparatory and career-oriented curricula. Courses range from the remedial to Advanced Placement.

The district's high schools at Demarest and Old Tappan were respectively the 9th and 18th-ranked public high schools in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.

Famous quotes containing the words northern, valley, high, school and/or district:

Our ancestors were savages. The story of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf is not a meaningless fable. The founders of every state which has risen to eminence have drawn their nourishment and vigor from a similar wild source. It was because the children of the Empire were not suckled by the wolf that they were conquered and displaced by the children of the northern forests who were.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

To be seventy years old is like climbing the Alps. You reach a snow-crowned summit, and see behind you the deep valley stretching miles and miles away, and before you other summits higher and whiter, which you may have strength to climb, or may not. Then you sit down and meditate and wonder which it will be.
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882)

As the Arab proverb says, “The dog barks and the caravan passes”. After having dropped this quotation, Mr. Norpois stopped to judge the effect it had on us. It was great; the proverb was known to us: it had been replaced that year among men of high worth by this other: “Whoever sows the wind reaps the storm”, which had needed some rest since it was not as indefatigable and hardy as, “Working for the King of Prussia”.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

East, west, north, south, or like a school broke up,
Each hurries toward his home and sporting-place.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
