North Shore-LIJ Health System

The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System was founded in 1997 with the merger of the North Shore Health System and LIJ Medical Center, creating a healthcare network that now includes 16 hospitals, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities, a home care network, a hospice network, and progressive care centers offering a range of outpatient services.

Headquartered in Great Neck, New York, North Shore-LIJ is the largest integrated health system in New York State, based on patient revenue, and the second-largest, nonprofit, secular healthcare system in the United States, based on number of beds. Its service area encompasses more than 7 million people in Long Island, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. With more than 44,000 employees, North Shore-LIJ is the largest employer on Long Island, and the third-largest private employer in New York City.

Famous quotes containing the words north, health and/or system:

Ah, how shall you know the dreary sorrow at the North Gate,
    With Li Po’s name forgotten,
And we guardsmen fed to the tigers.
    Li Po (701–762)

[The health plan was] constructed to be deconstructed. [Instead,] it was described as an ultimatum by our opponents and therefore used to undermine the process of reaching agreement.
    Hillary Rodham Clinton (b. 1947)

Short of a wholesale reform of college athletics—a complete breakdown of the whole system that is now focused on money and power—the women’s programs are just as doomed as the men’s are to move further and further away from the academic mission of their colleges.... We have to decide if that’s the kind of success for women’s sports that we want.
Christine H. B. Grant, U.S. university athletic director. As quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, p. A42 (May 12, 1993)
