National Registration Identity Card - Privacy Issues

Privacy Issues

For years, the NRIC number has been used by both government and commercial organizations as an unambiguous and "tidy" identifier for Singaporeans. Full NRIC numbers have been listed to identify winners of lucky draws. It is possible to borrow books from the National Library Board simply by scanning the barcode on a borrower's NRIC card at self-service kiosks, without requiring further authentication. Such instances have led to questions of possible fraud and identity theft. In response to such concerns, only the last three digits and the letters are publicly displayed or published. (The first three digits are not displayed as they easily give away a person's age.)

Famous quotes containing the words privacy and/or issues:

Isn’t privacy about keeping taboos in their place?
    Kate Millet (b. 1934)

The current flows fast and furious. It issues in a spate of words from the loudspeakers and the politicians. Every day they tell us that we are a free people fighting to defend freedom. That is the current that has whirled the young airman up into the sky and keeps him circulating there among the clouds. Down here, with a roof to cover us and a gasmask handy, it is our business to puncture gasbags and discover the seeds of truth.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
