Early Life
Al-Idrisi traced his descent to the Hammudid family of North Africa, and through them to the Idrisids of Morocco and ultimately the prophet Muhammad.
Al-Idrisi was born in the Almoravid city of Ceuta, where his great-grandfather had fled after the fall of Málaga in Al-Andalus. He spent much of his early life travelling through North Africa, and Spain and seems to have acquired detailed information on both regions. He visited Anatolia when he was barely 16. He is known to have studied in Córdoba
Apparently his travels took him to many parts of Europe including Portugal, the Pyrenees, the French Atlantic coast, Hungary, and Jórvík also known as York, in England.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“Our instructed vagrancy, which has hardly time to linger by the hedgerows, but runs away early to the tropics, and is at home with palms and banyanswhich is nourished on books of travel, and stretches the theatre of its imagination to the Zambesi.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
“There is a place where we are always alone with our own mortality, where we must simply have something greater than ourselves to hold ontoGod or history or politics or literature or a belief in the healing power of love, or even righteous anger.... A reason to believe, a way to take the world by the throat and insist that there is more to this life than we have ever imagined.”
—Dorothy Allison (b. 1949)
