History
founded in 1977 in Buffalo, New York by David M. Gordon. It was a wholesale company which also operated, at its peak, five stores in the Buffalo area. One of their stores still exists in Cheektowaga, New York called Dave's Christmas Wonderland. Dave's is the largest Christmas store in Western New York, and has become a Christmas Destination. In 2001 while attending Penn State, David's son Nathan Gordon, had the idea of selling the companies goods online via eBay. Instead of selling a tractor trailer of items for $5 a piece, Nathan had the idea of selling items one at a time for $10 each. While it was to hard keeping track of everything away at school, his sister Sarah Gordon took the idea and put a small office in the building with David's wife Paulette Gordon. The first online name of Gordon Companies, Inc. was called WPoohandFriends, due to the large amount of Winnie the Pooh collectibles they were selling. After graduation in May 2004, Nathan moved back home to rejoin the online company and the name was soon changed to Merchant Overstock.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.”
—J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)
“We know only a single science, the science of history. One can look at history from two sides and divide it into the history of nature and the history of men. However, the two sides are not to be divided off; as long as men exist the history of nature and the history of men are mutually conditioned.”
—Karl Marx (18181883)
“We are told that men protect us; that they are generous, even chivalric in their protection. Gentlemen, if your protectors were women, and they took all your property and your children, and paid you half as much for your work, though as well or better done than your own, would you think much of the chivalry which permitted you to sit in street-cars and picked up your pocket- handkerchief?”
—Mary B. Clay, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 3, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
