Mario Puzo - Influence of Dostoyevsky

Influence of Dostoyevsky

Puzo's favorite writer was Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He was deeply influenced by his books, particularly The Brothers Karamazov which Puzo quoted in his books, The Dark Arena, Fools Die, The Fourth K, and The Family. The character Stefano Andolini, in The Sicilian, was derived from Dostoyevsky's major character Stepan Trofimovich Verkhovensky in The Possessed. Luca Brasi, in The Godfather, came from Raskolnikov. Puzo referred to Dostoyevsky as his "personal favourite" to the editor Jonathan Karp.

Famous quotes containing the words influence of, influence and/or dostoyevsky:

We should be blessed if we lived in the present always, and took advantage of every accident that befell us, like the grass which confesses the influence of the slightest dew that falls on it; and did not spend our time in atoning for the neglect of past opportunities, which we call doing our duty.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Modern Western thought will pass into history and be incorporated in it, will have its influence and its place, just as our body will pass into the composition of grass, of sheep, of cutlets, and of men. We do not like that kind of immortality, but what is to be done about it?
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)

Imagine that it is you yourself who are erecting the edifice of human destiny with the aim of making men happy in the end, of giving them peace and contentment at last, but that to do that it is absolutely necessary, and indeed quite inevitable, to torture to death only one tiny creature, the little girl who beat her breast with her little fist, and to found the edifice on her unavenged tears—would you consent to be the architect on those conditions?
    —Feodor Dostoyevsky (1821–1881)
