Margaret Nolan - Career

Career

Born in Hampstead, London to Irish parents, Margaret Nolan adopted the name Vicky Kennedy while working in the 'glamour' scene during the early 1960s. Her best glamour photo modelling work was with Harrison Marks in Kamera and other magazines. She later reverted to her birth name of Margaret Nolan and appeared in a number of television and film roles, including A Hard Day's Night with the Beatles and the James Bond film Goldfinger in the small role of Dink, Bond's masseuse. She was given bigger roles in several 1970s Carry On films, most sizably Carry on Girls. She also appeared in straight theatre, becoming interested in political themes, and acted in one of the first episodes of police drama The Sweeney.

For Goldfinger Nolan was painted gold and wore a gold bikini for the titles, advertisements and soundtrack cover - not Shirley Eaton as in the narrative of the film. It is the first title sequence to be shown in installation at MOMA, New York, in 2012. Nolan also appeared in Playboy magazine following her appearance in Goldfinger. The scene in Carry On Girls, where a woman in a one-piece swim suit sneezes and bursts open two buttons on her outfit (revealing most of her breasts) is Nolan. The same film contains the sequence of Nolan (now in a silver bikini) and Barbara Windsor cat-fighting on a hotel floor. In Carry On At Your Convenience the composer Eric Rogers had referenced Nolan's Goldfinger appearance by using its opening musical notation on a close-up of Nolan.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Nolan talked about living in Spain and becoming an artist. Nolan's artwork, which includes photomontages constructed from her old headshots, can be viewed at her official website. She has exhibited in London at Brick Lane Gallery, and a screen print is held by Kemistry Gallery. In 2009, some of her early publicity shots were also used for screen-prints by the Brighton-based graffiti artist Hutch. Nolan currently lives and works in her home town of Hampstead. Margaret Nolan continues to exhibit, and occasionally attends conventions for film fans.

Famous quotes containing the word career:

From a hasty glance through the various tests I figure it out that I would be classified in Group B, indicating “Low Average Ability,” reserved usually for those just learning to speak the English Language and preparing for a career of holding a spike while another man hits it.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

I seemed intent on making it as difficult for myself as possible to pursue my “male” career goal. I not only procrastinated endlessly, submitting my medical school application at the very last minute, but continued to crave a conventional female role even as I moved ahead with my “male” pursuits.
    Margaret S. Mahler (1897–1985)

“Never hug and kiss your children! Mother love may make your children’s infancy unhappy and prevent them from pursuing a career or getting married!” That’s total hogwash, of course. But it shows on extreme example of what state-of-the-art “scientific” parenting was supposed to be in early twentieth-century America. After all, that was the heyday of efficiency experts, time-and-motion studies, and the like.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
