Border Dispute
Main article: Belgaum border disputeMaharashtra has a border dispute with the neighbouring state of Karnataka over the district of Belgaum. Belgaum was incorporated into the newly formed Mysore state (now Karnataka) with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act (1956), which reorganised India's states along linguistic lines despite having about three-fourths of the total population speaking Marathi. Since then, Maharashtra has continued to claim the district. While the case is awaiting a verdict in the Supreme Court of India, the Government of Maharashtra wants the Central government to declare Belgaum and adjoining 865 villages as a Union Territory. Karnataka has rejected the move, insisting that Marathis in Karnataka were safe and lived in harmony.
