Linus Torvalds - Authority and Trademark

Authority and Trademark

As of 2006, approximately two percent of the Linux kernel was written by Torvalds himself. As thousands have contributed to the Linux kernel, this percentage is one of the largest contributions to it. Though, he stated in 2012, that his own personal contribution is mostly merging code written by others, with little programming. Torvalds remains the final authority on what new code is incorporated into the standard Linux kernel.

Torvalds owns the "Linux" trademark and monitors the use of it, chiefly through the Linux Mark Institute.

Famous quotes containing the words authority and and/or authority:

Freedom of conscience entails more dangers than authority and despotism.
    Michel Foucault (1926–1984)

Contact with men who wield power and authority still leaves an intangible sense of repulsion. It’s very like being in close proximity to faecal matter, the faecal embodiment of something unmentionable, and you wonder what it is made of and when it acquired its historically sacred character.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
