Famous quotes containing the word heir:

    ‘Tis the curse of service,
Preferment goes by letter and affection,
And not by old gradation, where each second
    Stood heir to th’ first.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    To die, to sleep—
No more, and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to—’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep.
To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil
    Must give us pause.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

You never enjoy the world aright, till the sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens and crowned with the stars: and perceive yourself to be the sole heir of the whole world.
    Thomas Traherne (1636–1674)
