Urban Development
The city has completed a number of urban development projects aimed at making the city centre friendlier to pedestrians:
- Jalan Meldrum, formerly a two-way street, was narrowed into a single-lane street with an accompanying pedestrian mall having outdoor cafe kiosks.
- The area around OCBC Bank and the City Council building was made more pedestrian-friendly.
- Legaran Segget, or Segget Walk, was constructed.
- Laman Tun Sri Lanang, a small park in the heart of the city, was constructed.

Famous quotes containing the words urban and/or development:
“A peasant becomes fond of his pig and is glad to salt away its pork. What is significant, and is so difficult for the urban stranger to understand, is that the two statements are connected by an and and not by a but.”
—John Berger (b. 1926)
“The man, or the boy, in his development is psychologically deterred from incorporating serving characteristics by an easily observable fact: there are already people around who are clearly meant to serve and they are girls and women. To perform the activities these people are doing is to risk being, and being thought of, and thinking of oneself, as a woman. This has been made a terrifying prospect and has been made to constitute a major threat to masculine identity.”
—Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
