John McEwen - Early Life

Early Life

McEwen was born at Chiltern, Victoria to David James McEwen (died 1907), a pharmacist from Ireland, and his second wife Amy Ellen (née Porter; died 1901). McEwen was orphaned at an early age and raised by his grandmother. He was educated at state schools and at 15 became a junior public service clerk. He enlisted in the Army immediately upon turning 18 but the First World War ended while he was still in training. He commenced dairy farming at Stanhope, Victoria, near Shepparton.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

Parents ... are sometimes a bit of a disappointment to their children. They don’t fulfil the promise of their early years.
    Anthony Powell (b. 1905)

We are all conceived in close prison; in our mothers’ wombs, we are close prisoners all; when we are born, we are born but to the liberty of the house; prisoners still, though within larger walls; and then all our life is but a going out to the place of execution, to death.
    John Donne (c. 1572–1631)
