In January 2012, it was announced that Steinman is working with Terry Jones of Monty Python fame on a heavy metal version of The Nutcracker.
In February of the same year, it was announced that he would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 14.
In May 2012, Steinman was scheduled to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater, Amherst College, at the college's 191st commencement. However, honorary degrees are awarded only in person, and Steinman "had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances."
