The younger son, James (1752–1823), also embarked on a career with the navy. He served at sea for a number of years, rising to the rank of post-captain, and being notable for his role in the Battle of Vizagapatam in 1804, for which he was knighted. Famous quotes containing the word family:

A family with an old person has a living treasure of gold.
    Chinese proverb.

Productive collaborations between family and school, therefore, will demand that parents and teachers recognize the critical importance of each other’s participation in the life of the child. This mutuality of knowledge, understanding, and empathy comes not only with a recognition of the child as the central purpose for the collaboration but also with a recognition of the need to maintain roles and relationships with children that are comprehensive, dynamic, and differentiated.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)

Family lore can be a bore, but only when you are hearing it, never when you are relating it to the ones who will be carrying it on for you. A family without a storyteller or two has no way to make sense out of their past and no way to get a sense of themselves.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)
