Retirement and Death
After a substantial hearing loss, he assumed senior status on January 31, 1941, effectively resigning from the court. He lived at the Rochambeau apartment complex in Washington, D.C. until his death on August 24, 1946, aged 84. His length of service was 26 years, 3 months, 19 days.
McReynolds never married, which places him in the company of four other justices in the Court's history.
