Isola Del Liri - Main Sights

Main Sights

The town's main sight is the Castello Boncompagni-Viscogliosi, a fortified palace near two c- 30 m-high waterfalls (Cascata Grande and Cascata del Valcatoio) and a bridge on river. It is mentioned for the first time in 1100. After the acquisition of the Duchy of Sora by the della Rovere family, it became one of their main residences. It was also housed by their successors as dukes, the Boncompagni; in the 17th century Costanza Sforza turned into a luxurious palace, with biblica frescoes and basreliefs of the duchy's lands, as well as a garden.

About 2 km to the north of the town is the church of San Domenico, erected in the 12th century, which is said to mark the site of the villa of Cicero.

Famous quotes containing the words main and/or sights:

Whoever considers morality the main objective of human existence, seems to me like a person who defines the purpose of a clock as not going wrong. The first objective for a clock, is, however, that it does run; not going wrong is an additional regulative function. If not a watch’s greatest accomplishment were not going wrong, unwound watches might be the best.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

Television hangs on the questionable theory that whatever happens anywhere should be sensed everywhere. If everyone is going to be able to see everything, in the long run all sights may lose whatever rarity value they once possessed, and it may well turn out that people, being able to see and hear practically everything, will be specially interested in almost nothing.
