Islet Cell Transplantation - Future

Future

Just as early studies showed islet transplantation's promise, research must now overcome the hurdles revealed by the recent islet transplant experience. New immunomodulatory agents offer the greatest hope of revolutionizing the field. New drug regimens capable of inducing tolerance to the transplanted islets would allow recipients to maintain their grafts without general immunosuppression and its associated toxicities. While many targets are currently under investigation, none are ready for clinical use.

Islet cells can also be encapsulated with a coating that protects them from the immune system, while still allowing the release of insulin.

Famous quotes containing the word future:

I am always glad to think that my education was, for the most part, informal, and had not the slightest reference to a future business career. It left me free and untrammeled to approach my business problems without the limiting influence of specific training.
    Alice Foote MacDougall (1867–1945)

You have too much of a life yet before you, and have shown too much of promise as an officer, for your future to be lightly surrendered.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

We live in an age when to be young and to be indifferent can be no longer synonymous. We must prepare for the coming hour. The claims of the Future are represented by suffering millions; and the Youth of a Nation are the trustees of Posterity.
    Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881)
