Science and Drilling Operators
Drilling operations are conducted and managed by three IODP Implementing Organizations (IOs):
- USIO, the United States Implementing Organization, carries out expeditions on the riserless drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution;
- ESO, the ECORD Science Operator, manages mission specific expeditions on various platforms;
- JPIO, the Japan Implementing Organization, manages operations aboard the riser-equipped drilling vessel Chikyu.
Each drilling expedition is led by a pair of co-chief scientists, with a team of scientists supported by an IO staff scientist. Each IO provides a combination of services: technical, operational, and financial management; logging; laboratory; core repository; data management; and publication. Although each IO is responsible for its own platform operations and performance, its science operations are funded by the Lead Agencies.

Famous quotes containing the words science and, science and/or drilling:
“Imagination could hardly do without metaphor, for imagination is, literally, the moving around in ones mind of images, and such images tend commonly to be metaphoric. Creative minds, as we know, are rich in images and metaphors, and this is true in science and art alike. The difference between scientist and artist has little to do with the ways of the creative imagination; everything to do with the manner of demonstration and verification of what has been seen or imagined.”
—Robert A. Nisbet (b. 1913)
“The method of political science ... is the interpretation of life; its instrument is insight, a nice understanding of subtle, unformulated conditions.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
“Dont spend your time in drilling soldiers, who may turn out hirelings after all, but give to undrilled peasantry a country to fight for.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
