Dowie is married and has two sons, Ollie and Will. He lives in Heaton, Bolton. Dowie also works as a commentator for Sky Sports News.
His niece Natasha Dowie is a footballer who played for Charlton Athletic Women while he was manager of the men's team. She now plays for Everton Ladies and made her first appearance for England in November 2009 at the age of 21. On 3 May 2010, the same day that Iain's Hull City were relegated, Natasha scored two goals to lead Everton to its first FA Women's Cup Final win, a 3–2 victory over Arsenal.
