Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest - Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study

Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study

For the first five or six years after its establishment the HBEF was used for research in forestry but soon its value for study of the forest ecosystem was recognized and it attracted the interest of researchers from major universities. The work at Hubbard Brook has led researchers there and elsewhere to try to model or better understand the complex forest ecosystem, including its interaction with humans. HBEF research teams have succeeded in elucidating a number of vexing environmental problems, most notably the harmful effects of acid rain. The forest preservation the research promotes helps to protect watershed chemistry, ambient humidity, seasonal temperature fluctuations, and wildlife habitats.

Famous quotes containing the words hubbard, brook and/or study:

Th’ only way t’ entertain some folks is t’ listen t’ ‘em.
—Kin Hubbard (F. [Frank] Mckinney Hubbard)

Under an oak, whose antique root peeps out
Upon the brook that brawls along this wood.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

We should always remember that the work of art is invariably the creation of a new world, so that the first thing we should do is to study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something brand new, having no obvious connection with the worlds we already know. When this new world has been closely studied, then and only then let us examine its links with other worlds, other branches of knowledge.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
