Hospital For Special Surgery - History

History

HSS was founded in 1863 as the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled in the home of Dr. James Knight on Second Avenue. A building was later constructed on Lexington Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets, but became the target for efforts to expand Grand Central Terminal. In 1912, the hospital moved to a six-story building between First Avenue and Second Avenue that is now the home to the Ford Foundation. The hospital moved to its present location in 1955.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I feel as tall as you.
Ellis Meredith, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 14, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

The history of all Magazines shows plainly that those which have attained celebrity were indebted for it to articles similar in natureto Berenice—although, I grant you, far superior in style and execution. I say similar in nature. You ask me in what does this nature consist? In the ludicrous heightened into the grotesque: the fearful coloured into the horrible: the witty exaggerated into the burlesque: the singular wrought out into the strange and mystical.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

There are two great unknown forces to-day, electricity and woman, but men can reckon much better on electricity than they can on woman.
Josephine K. Henry, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 15, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
