Famous quotes containing the word pupils:

    Master and Doctor are my titles;
    For ten years now, without repose,
    I’ve held my erudite recitals
    And led my pupils by the nose.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

    We saw one schoolhouse in our walk, and listened to the sounds which issued from it; but it appeared like a place where the process, not of enlightening, but of obfuscating the mind was going on, and the pupils received only so much light as could penetrate the shadow of the Catholic Church.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Close to the academy in this town they have erected a sort of gallows for the pupils to practice on. I thought that they might as well hang at once all who need to go through such exercises in so new a country, where there is nothing to hinder their living an outdoor life. Better omit Blair, and take the air.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
