Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes
The Hollywood Turf Cup is an American stakes race for thoroughbred horses at Hollywood Park Racetrack. A Grade I event, it is open to horses, age three and up, and run at a distance of one and one-half miles. The Hollywood Turf Cup offers a purse of $250,000.
Horses who previously ran in the Breeders' Cup Turf often run in the Turf Cup since it is the last major turf race of the year. As with all Hollywood Park turf stakes it was on hiatus in 2005.
John Henry's win in 1983 made him the first racehorse to surpass $4 million in career earnings. 1991 winner Miss Alleged is the only filly to ever win this race.
The race was run in two heats in 1982. It was raced at 1⅜ miles (11 furlongs) in 1982 and 1983.
Famous quotes containing the words hollywood, turf, cup and/or stakes:
“Just like those other black holes from outer space, Hollywood is postmodern to this extent: it has no center, only a spreading dead zone of exhaustion, inertia, and brilliant decay.”
—Arthur Kroker (b. 1945)
“One turf shall serve as pillow for us both;
One heart, one bed, two bosoms, and one troth.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“I write mainly for the kindly race of women. I am their sister, and in no way exempt from their sorrowful lot. I have drank [sic] the cup of their limitations to the dregs, and if my experience can help any sad or doubtful woman to outleap her own shadow, and to stand bravely out in the sunshine to meet her destiny, whatever it may be, I shall have done well; I have not written this book in vain.”
—Amelia E. Barr (18311919)
“Law makes long spokes of the short stakes of men.”
—William Empson (19061984)
