Harold Hill - Education

Education

History

By the early 1960s, Harold Hill had six secondary schools:

  • Broxhill Secondary Modern (Mixed), near the corner of Broxhill Road and Noak Hill Road
  • Harold Hill Grammar School (Mixed), on Appleby Drive
  • Harrowfield Secondary Modern School (Boys), on Settle Road
  • Harrowfield Secondary Modern School (Girls), on Settle Road – next door to, but completely separate from, the Boys' school
  • Havering College (Mixed), on Tring Gardens

These schools had been built to cope with the post-WW2 'baby-boom', but because of government education policy, Broxhill and Harold Hill Grammar merged to form Bedford Park Comprehensive. Then because of demographic changes, Quarles Boys' and Girls' Schools later merged with Harrowfield to form the Neave School (later King's Wood). After further name changes and closures, Harold Hill now has just one secondary school, Drapers' Academy, on the site of the former Harrowfield / Neave / King's Wood schools.

Famous quotes containing the word education:

Every day care center, whether it knows it or not, is a school. The choice is never between custodial care and education. The choice is between unplanned and planned education, between conscious and unconscious education, between bad education and good education.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On”, has solved and will always solve the problems of the human race.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

Bigotry is the disease of ignorance, of morbid minds; enthusiasm of the free and buoyant. Education and free discussion are the antidotes of both.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
