Above the ischial spine is a large notch, the greater sciatic notch, converted into a foramen by the sacrospinous ligament.
It transmits the Piriformis, the superior and inferior gluteal vessels and nerves, the sciatic and posterior femoral cutaneous nerves, the internal pudendal vessels, and the nerves to the Obturator internus and Quadratus femoris.
Of these, the superior gluteal vessels and nerve pass out above the Piriformis, the other structures below it.
Famous quotes containing the words greater and/or notch:
“Take the serious side of Disney, the Confucian side of Disney. Its in having taken an ethos ... where you have the values of courage and tenderness asserted in a way that everybody can understand. You have got an absolute genius there. You have got a greater correlation of nature than you have had since the time of Alexander the Great.”
—Ezra Pound (18851972)
“In any weather, at any hour of the day or night, I have been anxious to improve the nick of time, and notch it on my stick too; to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and the future, which is precisely the present moment; to toe that line.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
