Gloucester Railway Station - Services

Services

The station is served by several operators.

  • Arriva Trains Wales operates an hourly local service (with an hourly gap every three hours during off-peak periods) between Maesteg, Bridgend, Cardiff Central, Chepstow and Cheltenham Spa.
  • CrossCountry operates an hourly Cardiff Central - Nottingham service with 1 Nottingham-bound and 2 Cardiff-bound trains in the early morning plus 1 in each direction in the late evening stopping at Lydney, Chepstow, Caldicot and Severn Tunnel Junction. They also serve the city as part of their Cross-Country operations - only one train in each direction per day currently calls. On Mondays to Fridays, the northbound service calls at 20:46 and stops only at Cheltenham and Birmingham, and the southbound service calls at 22:06 and is the service from Edinburgh to Bristol Temple Meads. (There is a proposed Gloucestershire Parkway station to be located on the main Bristol to Birmingham line just north of the branch into Gloucester). Instead, passengers for Gloucester have to change at Cheltenham Spa for a connecting service. Gloucestershire Parkway, if now built, would be moved to the rear of Waterwells with a new station built at Tuffley for Gloucester-Bristol Temple Meads traffic.
  • First Great Western operates an hourly service to Swindon via the Golden Valley Line with 2-hourly extensions to London Paddington. They also operate an hourly Westbury & Bristol to Gloucester service, which has 2-hourly extensions to Cheltenham, Worcester & Great Malvern. There is a limited service to Chippenham and Melksham.
  • The London Midland Worcester to Gloucester service was discontinued from the start of the December 2009 railway timetable due to low passenger usage. However there is still one Friday night service from Birmingham New Street to Gloucester departing at 23:04 and arriving at 00:16 which travels via Droitwich Spa. A new Kidderminster-Gloucester service has been proposed, and would be London Midland operated.}} Other new services would see a direct train to Glasgow and Edinburgh originating at Swansea or Cardiff Central, and a direct service to Sharpness via the Berkeley line (currently freight-only).

The Swansea to London Paddington service on the South Wales Main Line can be diverted via Gloucester on a regular basis if required particularly at weekends to allow for maintenance work on the Severn Tunnel.

Famous quotes containing the word services:

Men will say that in supporting their wives, in furnishing them with houses and food and clothes, they are giving the women as much money as they could ever hope to earn by any other profession. I grant it; but between the independent wage-earner and the one who is given his keep for his services is the difference between the free-born and the chattel.
    Elizabeth M. Gilmer (1861–1951)

Those services which the community will most readily pay for, it is most disagreeable to render.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I see this evident, that we willingly accord to piety only the services that flatter our passions.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
