Range
As for other UHF radio services, reliable range is considered to be line-of-sight and the distance to the radio horizon can be estimated based on antenna height. Theoretical range between two hand-held units would be about one or two miles (about one and a half to three km), mobile units have higher antennas and range of around 5 miles (8 km). A GMRS repeater with an antenna that is high above the surrounding terrain can extend the usable range over a wide area, for example up to 20 miles radius around the repeater station. Obstructions such as hills and buildings can reduce range. Higher power does not necessarily give a proportional increase in range, although it may improve the reliability of communication at the limits of line-of-sight distance.

Famous quotes containing the word range:
“In the range of things toddlers have to learn and endlessly reviewwhy you cant put bottles with certain labels in your mouth, why you have to sit on the potty, why you cant take whatever you want in the store, why you dont hit your friendsby the time we got to why you cant drop your peas, well, I was dropping a few myself.”
—Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
“Culture is the suggestion, from certain best thoughts, that a man has a range of affinities through which he can modulate the violence of any master-tones that have a droning preponderance in his scale, and succor him against himself. Culture redresses this imbalance, puts him among equals and superiors, revives the delicious sense of sympathy, and warns him of the dangers of solitude and repulsion.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“A girl must allow others to share the responsibility for care, thus enabling others to care for her. She must learn how to care in ways appropriate to her age, her desires, and her needs; she then acts with authenticity. She must be allowed the freedom not to care; she then has access to a wide range of feelings and is able to care more fully.”
—Jeanne Elium (20th century)
