Official Recognition
Although Garhwali is the most spoken language of Uttarakhand, the state government has not recognized it yet. There are demands to make it the official language of Uttarakhand and to be taught at schools and universities. At the national level, there are constant demands to include Garhwali in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India so that it could be made one of the Scheduled Language of India. Recently, Member of Parliament from Pauri Garhwal, Satpal Maharaj brought a private member's bill to include Garhwali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which is being debated in the Lok Sabha.
