Naming Honors
It was announced by United States Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, on February 10, 2012, that the next U.S. Navy littoral combat ship will be named the USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10). This raised some controversy as traditionally navy ships have been named after people who have served or are intimately connected to the sea services. The naming of the Giffords, as well as ships being named after labour leader César Chávez and Democratic congressman John Murtha, caused the Senate to amend the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act to "require a report on the policies and practices...for naming the vessels of the Navy."
