Free-space Path Loss Formula
Free-space path loss is proportional to the square of the distance between the transmitter and receiver, and also proportional to the square of the frequency of the radio signal.
The equation for FSPL is
where:
- is the signal wavelength (in metres),
- is the signal frequency (in hertz),
- is the distance from the transmitter (in metres),
- is the speed of light in a vacuum, 2.99792458 × 108 metres per second.
This equation is only accurate in the far field where spherical spreading can be assumed; it does not hold close to the transmitter.

Famous quotes containing the words path, loss and/or formula:
“Examples are cited by soldiers, of men who have seen the cannon pointed, and the fire given to it, and who have stepped aside from he path of the ball. The terrors of the storm are chiefly confined to the parlour and the cabin.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Somebody who should have been born
is gone.
Yes, woman, such logic will lead
to loss without death. Or say what you meant,
you coward . . . this baby that I bleed.”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“Every formula which expresses a law of nature is a hymn of praise to God.”
—Maria Mitchell (18181889)
