Frank Hamilton Cushing - Significance of Work

Significance of Work

Cushing was an innovator in the development of the anthropological view that all peoples have a culture that they draw from. He was ahead of his time as the first participant observer who entered into and participated in another culture rather than studying and commenting on it as an outside observer.

Thomas Eakins painted him in Zuni costume and John K. Hillers took photographs at Zuni, some showing him as a Bow Priest.

Famous quotes containing the words significance of, significance and/or work:

For a parent, it’s hard to recognize the significance of your work when you’re immersed in the mundane details. Few of us, as we run the bath water or spread the peanut butter on the bread, proclaim proudly, “I’m making my contribution to the future of the planet.” But with the exception of global hunger, few jobs in the world of paychecks and promotions compare in significance to the job of parent.
    Joyce Maynard (20th century)

To grasp the full significance of life is the actor’s duty, to interpret it is his problem, and to express it his dedication.
    Marlon Brando (b. 1924)

They should own who can administer, not they who hoard and conceal; not they who, the greater proprietors they are, are only the greater beggars, but they whose work carves out work for more, opens a path for all.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
