Early Life
Forde was born at Mitchell, Queensland, and was the second of six children of Irish immigrant parents. His father was working as a grazier at the time of his birth, and Forde was educated at St. Mary's College, Toowoomba, a Catholic school, and became a teacher. Settling in Rockhampton, he became active in the Labor Party and in workers' education groups.
