Executive Committee of The Palestine Liberation Organization

The Executive Committee (PLO EC) is the highest executive body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Its 18 members are elected by the PLO Parliament, the Palestinian National Council (PNC), often as representatives of the PLO member factions. The Executive Committee members hold special areas of responsibility, such as military matters, foreign affairs, finance and social affairs, making their role similar to that of ministers in a national government. Elections have been held irregularly, and the last PLO Executive Committee was elected by the PNC in 1996. Some of its deceased members were replaced at the 2009 PNC meeting in Ramallah.

The PLO EC meets abroad an in the Palestinian territories.

It is headed by the Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization elected by the Executive Committee. There are only 12 living Executive Committee members, the minimum for a quorum, according to the Constitution of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Famous quotes containing the words executive, committee, palestine, liberation and/or organization:

One point in my public life: I did all I could for the reform of the civil service, for the building up of the South, for a sound currency, etc., etc., but I never forgot my party.... I knew that all good measures would suffer if my Administration was followed by the defeat of my party. Result, a great victory in 1880. Executive and legislature both completely Republican.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

The small creatures chirp thinly through the dust, through the night.
    O mother
    What shall I cry?
We demand a committee, a representative committee, a committee of investigation
    RESIGN RESIGN RESIGN
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

I know a lady in Venice would have walked barefoot to Palestine for a touch of his nether lip.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

I don’t think America’s the center of the world anymore. I think African women will lead the way [in] ... women’s liberation ... The African woman, she’s got a country, she’s got the flag, she’s got her own army, got the navy. She doesn’t have a racism problem. She’s not afraid that if she speaks up, her man will say goodbye to her.
    Faith Ringgold (b. 1934)

To fight oppression, and to work as best we can for a sane organization of society, we do not have to abandon the state of mind of freedom. If we do that we are letting the same thuggery in by the back door that we are fighting off in front of the house.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
