Esther Valentine - Character Creation

Character Creation

Linder was a recurring cast member until 1985, when she was upgraded to a full-time contract. She initially only a day-guest character, however she has stayed on for nearly 30 years. She is described by Kate Linder as "very loyal and a very giving person. She gets run over and people take advantage of her." The character originally had no name due to the role's lack of importance. The character's first name was then coined by Jeanne Cooper, who started calling her 'Esther' out of the blue during show tapings. The show's producers than ran a contest in a national magazine to let fans help determine the character's last name. Among the two finalists, "Diamond" and "Valentine", Linder selected the latter because she was married on Valentine's Day.

Famous quotes containing the words character and/or creation:

The legislator should direct his attention above all to the education of youth; for the neglect of education does harm to the constitution. The citizen should be molded to suit the form of government under which he lives. For each government has a peculiar character which originally formed and which continues to preserve it. The character of democracy creates democracy, and the character of oligarchy creates oligarchy.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

One of the necessary qualifications of an efficient business man in these days of industrial literature seems to be the ability to write, in clear and idiomatic English, a 1,000-word story on how efficient he is and how he got that way.... It seems that the entire business world were devoting its working hours to the creation of a school of introspective literature.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
