Equilibrium Temperature - Calculation For Extrasolar Planets

Calculation For Extrasolar Planets

For extrasolar planets the temperature of the star can be calculated from the color of the star using Planck's law. The calculated temperature of the star can be used with the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram to determine the absolute magnitude of the star, which can then be used with observational data to determine the distance to the star and finally the size of the star. Orbital simulations are used to determine what orbital parameters (including orbital distance) produce the observations seen by astronomers. Astronomers use a hypothesized albedo and can then estimate the equilibrium temperature.

Famous quotes containing the words calculation and/or planets:

Common sense is the measure of the possible; it is composed of experience and prevision; it is calculation appled to life.
    Henri-Frédéric Amiel (1821–1881)

Why are all these dolls falling out of the sky?
    Was there a father?
Or have the planets cut holes in their nets
    and let our childhood out,
or are we the dolls themselves,
    born but never fed?
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
