In scattering theory and in particular in nuclear physics and particle physics, elastic scattering is one of the specific forms of scattering. In this process, the kinetic energy of the incident particles is conserved in the Center-Of-Mass frame, only their direction of propagation is modified (by interaction with other particles and/or a potential).

Famous quotes containing the words elastic and/or scattering:
“We want some coat woven of elastic steel, stout as the first, and limber as the second. We want a ship in these billows we inhabit. An angular, dogmatic house would be rent to chips and splinters, in this storm of many elements. No, it must be tight, and fit to the form of man, to live at all; as a shell is the architecture of a house founded on the sea.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“And Time, a maniac scattering dust,
And Life, a Fury slinging flame.”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
