Edgar Tekere - Independence Celebration and Bob Marley

Independence Celebration and Bob Marley

Edgar Tekere being the ZANU-PF Secretary General, personally invited Bob Marley to perform at Rufaro Stadium, for the official Zimbabwean Independence Celebration. Marley's music was the inspiration for the guerilla freedom fighters whilst they were in the bush fighting. More than 100 000 Zimbabweans attended the concert, and Bob Marley performed the song "Zimbabwe", an unofficial Zimbabwean anthem. He also stayed with Edgar Tekere during this tour date.

Famous quotes containing the words independence, celebration and/or marley:

The subject of the novel is reality liberated from soul. The reader in complete independence presented with a structured process: let him evaluate it, not the author. The façade of the novel cannot be other than stone or steel, flashing electrically or dark, but silent.
    Alfred Döblin (1878–1957)

No annual training or muster of soldiery, no celebration with its scarfs and banners, could import into the town a hundredth part of the annual splendor of our October. We have only to set the trees, or let them stand, and Nature will find the colored drapery,—flags of all her nations, some of whose private signals hardly the botanist can read,—while we walk under the triumphal arches of the elms.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.
None but ourselves can free our minds.
    —Bob Marley (1945–1981)
