History
Originally White Rock Secondary School, Earl Marriott Secondary was founded in 1972 and named after its first Principal, Earl Marriott, who eventually became Superintendent of Surrey School District #36. EMS enjoys a lighthearted rivalry with Semiahmoo Secondary School as well as Elgin Park Secondary School. This year, the Sandcastle Cup, a major annual game between the Mariners and Semiahmoo Totems, was won by E.M.S. Earl Marriott is best known for its excellence in the theatre, as well as its athletic achievements, particularly and most recently in rugby. EMS puts on either a play or musical out of the indwelling Wheelhouse Theatre year after year. At 2:00pm on March 1, 2011, over 1000 students walked out to intervene the new bell schedule. Politicians, principals, and the media all showed to take part of the anti-government petition.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The history of a soldiers wound beguiles the pain of it.”
—Laurence Sterne (17131768)
“There are two great unknown forces to-day, electricity and woman, but men can reckon much better on electricity than they can on woman.”
—Josephine K. Henry, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 15, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
“Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under mens reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
