Among his other interests were historic architecture. He formed the Civic Trust in 1956 and was its President; the Royal Institution of British Architects made him an honorary Fellow in 1968, and the Royal Town Planning Institute made him an honorary member. He was also a trustee of the World Security Trust.
His business activities included a Directorship of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, which was later part of Lonrho of which he became Chairman. Famous quotes containing the word interests:
“It is ultimately in employers best interests to have their employees families functioning smoothly. In the long run, children who misbehave because they are inadequately supervised or marital partners who disapprove of their spouses work situation are productivity problems. Just as work affects parents and children, parents and children affect the workplace by influencing the employed parents morale, absenteeism, and productivity.”
—Ann C. Crouter (20th century)
“Women are taught that their main goal in life is to serve othersfirst men, and later, children. This prescription leads to enormous problems, for it is supposed to be carried out as if women did not have needs of their own, as if one could serve others without simultaneously attending to ones own interests and desires. Carried to its perfection, it produces the martyr syndrome or the smothering wife and mother.”
—Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
“What a country calls its vital economic interests are not the things which enable its citizens to live, but the things which enable it to make war. Petrol is more likely than wheat to be a cause of international conflict.”
—Simone Weil (19091943)
