Drug Policy of Sweden - Health Care For Drug Abusers

Health Care For Drug Abusers

All Swedish citizens have the right to health care by going to an open reception or, in the case of a medical emergency, a hospital. Most Swedes have no private health insurance. A medical consultation will cost between $14 and $50 including the cost of various laboratory tests. For professionals in health care any information about any patient's drug abuse is confidential by law, if the patient is not suspected of a crime that could result in at least two years imprisonment or if the patient are to drive under the influence of drugs.

A person who has developed a drug addiction can apply to the local social welfare board in his home community to become admitted to a treatment center for drug addicts in an other part of the country. If the application is approved, the social welfare board pay the treatment including all cost for staying at the treatment center for several months. The social welfare board is financed by local taxes. This type of treatment is expensive (but less expensive than a long imprisonment for crimes) so only a few thousands of applications are approved per year.

Famous quotes containing the words health, care and/or drug:

... work is only part of a man’s life; play, family, church, individual and group contacts, educational opportunities, the intelligent exercise of citizenship, all play a part in a well-rounded life. Workers are men and women with potentialities for mental and spiritual development as well as for physical health. We are paying the price today of having too long sidestepped all that this means to the mental, moral, and spiritual health of our nation.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

Life at the greatest and best is but a froward child, that must be humoured and coaxed a little till it falls asleep, and then all the care is over.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774)

Upon entering my vein, the drug would start a warm edge that would surge along until the brain consumed it in a gentle explosion. It began in the back of the neck and rose rapidly until I felt such pleasure that the world sympathizing took on a soft, lofty appeal.
Gus Van Sant, U.S. screenwriter and director, and Dan Yost. Bob Hughes (Matt Dillon)
