Early Life

Born to a Jewish family (Jacques Henri Bloch and Suzanne Levi-Strauss) in Barrault, Paris, France in 1916; Bloch had three brothers. Before the war, she was a secretary at Citroen. As the family were Jewish, they were rounded up by the Gestapo in 1942 in occupied France.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

I doubt that I would have taken so many leaps in my own writing or been as clear about my feminist and political commitments if I had not been anointed as early as I was. Some major form of recognition seems to have to mark a woman’s career for her to be able to go out on a limb without having her credentials questioned.
    Ruth Behar (b. 1956)

Death or life or life or death
Death is life and life is death
I gotta use words when I talk to you
But if you understand or if you dont
That’s nothing to me and nothing to you
We all gotta do what we gotta do
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
