Critical Exponent - Definition

Definition

Phase transitions occur at a certain temperature, called the critical temperature . We want to describe the behaviour of a physical quantity in terms of a power law around the critical temperature. So we introduce the reduced temperature, which is zero at the phase transition, and define the critical exponent .

This results in the power law we were looking for.

It is important to remember that this represents the asymptotic behavior of the function as .

Famous quotes containing the word definition:

Mothers often are too easily intimidated by their children’s negative reactions...When the child cries or is unhappy, the mother reads this as meaning that she is a failure. This is why it is so important for a mother to know...that the process of growing up involves by definition things that her child is not going to like. I’m beginning to think that the proper definition of “Man” is “an animal that writes letters.”
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)
