According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 2,126.85 square miles (5,508.5 km2), of which 599.77 square miles (1,553.4 km2) (or 28.20%) is land and 1,527.08 square miles (3,955.1 km2) (or 71.80%) is water. However, the majority of this area is the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the islands.
