Churches Uniting in Christ - Purpose

Purpose

The purpose of CUIC has always been unity (as reflected in their current slogan, "reconciling the baptized, seeking unity with justice"). This reflects one of the core scripture passages in the ecumenical movement, Jesus' prayer in John 17:21, "That they all may be one". CUIC has approached this goal of unity in various ways throughout its history.

Famous quotes containing the word purpose:

Art for art’s sake, with no purpose, for any purpose perverts art. But art achieves a purpose which is not its own.
    Benjamin Constant (1767–1834)

The chief want, in every State that I have been into, was a high and earnest purpose in its inhabitants. This alone draws out “the great resources” of Nature, and at last taxes her beyond her resources; for man naturally dies out of her.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

There are a sort of men whose visages
Do cream and mantle like a standing pond,
And do a willful stillness entertain,
With purpose to be dressed in an opinion
    Of wisdom, gravity, profound conceit,
As who should say, “I am Sir Oracle,
And when I ope my lips let no dog bark!”
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
